12 year old "Naughty Nora"

A 12-year schoolboy is celebrating after being crowned Britain's youngest drag queen. Redvers Stoke thought he had no chance when he entered the prestigious annual drag queen competition in his home village of Sticker, Cornwall.

But he decided to give it a go and slipped on his mother Georgie's bra and a tight pink slinky dress, a wig, and towering heels. Redvers then, face full of make-up, took to the stage and enchanted judges with country and western songs and own drag persona - Naughty Nora. He belted out versions of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and a string of Dolly Parton hits.

The schoolboy won the competition to the shock of his farm worker parents, Georgie and Matthew, both 43, and must now perform Drag Queen duties in Sticker for the next year.  Redvers is now is such demand he frequently performs as Naughty Nora for functions and events in the village.

He said: "When I heard about the drag queen competition I was desperate to enter. I've always been open to new things. I'm the only boy in my school choir and it doesn't bother me. I've got friends who are boys and girls and they think it's really cool when I dress up. My best friends at school even know how to put my make up on. They always come over before I have a function and do my nails and eyelashes. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I think it's really funny.  I might like dressing up in women's clothes but I still like girls. It's just a little hobby of mine."

Redvers began dressing in women's clothes before he started primary school. But his first foray into the drag queen world was at the Sticker fete last month when he competed against men almost three times his age. Hilariously, Redvers squeezed into a tight dress, padded his mother's bra with toilet paper and wore a black wig. The judges were so impressed he was crowned Carnival Drag Queen.

Since then, Redvers has been performing his drag queen duties by attending events in Sticker in full costume - and has bought a blonde wig for his Naughty Nora outfit.

Mother Georgie said: "I couldn't be more proud of Redvers, he is so popular and entertaining. We did worry at the beginning about whether it was right for him to segregate himself but we decided to let him get on with it. He is totally happy and it is so funny to see him dressed up. His Naughty Norma routine is very convincing and he was so delighted when he won. It's like he morphs into this alter ego when he dresses up as her, he just bubbles with humour and creativity. He becomes a real diva. He had always been very popular and just loves being the center of attention."

Redvers is a keen singer and practices his favourite Michael Jackson songs at home, as well as country and western tunes. Father Matthew added: "We think it's hilarious."

Just curious, did he come up with the persona name "Naughty Nora" all by himself? 

I got news for Redvers, you may like girls but I doubt there are many girls that would like a boy who dresses up prettier than they do!

Gun Control: Lessons from European Violence

The recent outbreaks of indiscriminate violence in Europe highlight a disturbing trend of decivilization throughout Western society. Pundits and "experts" weave countless theories to try to explain what's happening. Some sound plausible enough, but only those of us who understand sound economic theory have the tools to decipher the meaning of these current events. Those who use these tools will discover that the state has not only caused this turmoil directly in various ways (via welfarism, militarism, inflation, state schooling, and more), but it is also preventing people from defending themselves and their property. I am referring, of course, to gun-control laws.


England

First we'll consider the riots that erupted across England last week. Vandals and looters were wantonly destroying property, committing arson, stealing goods from stores, and mugging passersby. Innocent people were rightfully scared for their well-being, especially since the police are evidently too inept to stop any of this. One reporter, after being mugged and beaten, called the authorities only to be told to "go home."

It should hardly be surprising people are so defenseless. As of 2007, England, Wales, and Scotland ranked below nearly every other developed country in terms of private firearm possession. Download PDF British gun-control laws can only be described as draconian. The 1997 Firearms Act all but banned handguns from private ownership. (Interestingly, this legislation was not applied to Northern Ireland, where gun ownership is far more widespread.) All "legal" firearms require a state-issued license to possess. License holders must report their firearms purchases to the police and renew their licenses every few years. Local police precincts can impose additional restrictions on gun ownership within their turf. Police have the power to revoke the license if they suspect the license holder has violated their rules.

All of these hurdles and red tape significantly raise the cost of purchasing and possessing a firearm. On the margins, we should expect this to lead to less firearm ownership and fewer means for innocent people to defend themselves and their families.

In the wake of the recent violence, British property owners have had to resort to alternative means of self-defense. Amazon.co.uk reported that baton and aluminum baseball bat sales soared over 5,000 percent overnight on the third day of the riots. One customer wrote the following review:

This bat is perfectly weighted and will suit any UK shop-owner looking to protect their property. Thanks to the ergonomic handle, one easy swing should be enough to shatter patellas, skulls or any other bone on your targeted looter. Personally, I would recommend also investing in some fingerless gloves for extra grip.

Another point to be made about the debacle in England involves the murder that triggered all this. A 29-year-old man named Mark Duggan was shot and killed by agents of the state on August 4th, 2011, in Tottenham, where the riots began soon afterward. Police quickly accused the victim of firing at them, but the Independent Police Complaints Commission reported on August 10th that there exists no evidence that the victim's gun found at the scene had been fired at all.

Maybe police would be less inclined to murder citizens in cold blood if they were facing an armed populace.


Norway

Perhaps not surprisingly, Norway is also a bastion of gun-control fanaticism, although gun ownership is far more prevalent among Norwegians than among Brits. (Gun ownership in both countries is far lower than in the United States.) Norwegian laws ban all automatic weapons. Handguns are only allowed if they are a certain caliber, and there are restrictions on the types and quantities of ammunition one can buy. Concealed carry is illegal. As is sadly the norm in our world, all would-be gun owners must first apply for licenses, which are normally granted only to hunters and professional shooters. If you are lucky enough to be granted a license, police are allowed to inspect your home to check if your firearms are properly stored.

As we all know, these laws did nothing to stop Anders Behring Breivik from massacring 69 people on the tiny island of Utøya. In fact, if even a single camp counselor had a firearm, perhaps the tragedy would have ended differently. It is mind-boggling to me that the organizers of a youth camp taking place in the wilderness had no means of defending the children. That is the height of irresponsibility. Is it any surprise the camp was organized by the country's left-wing Labor Party?

Once again, the agents of the state proved their own incompetence. Police didn't arrive on Utøya until an hour after the maniac started his slaughter. This is what happens when the police are given a de facto monopoly on gun ownership.

Those of us familiar with Misesian theory know that the state will always tend to respond to the disastrous consequences of intervention with even more intervention. As if trying to prove Mises right, Finnish politicians quickly announced following the Norway attacks that they will accelerate the imposition of stricter gun-control policies in Finland. These new rules will make handguns less accessible, raise age requirements, and force gun license applicants to undergo "testing for their suitability." The politicians are no doubt promising these laws will make people safer. Adherents of Rockwell's law, on the other hand, will know exactly what to expect.


Conclusion

The state of Western society is clearly worsening. As individuals and governments drown in debt, economic growth will remain stagnant at best. The dependent classes of society will see their standard of living rapidly deteriorate as the crisis unfolds. If history is any indicator, crime waves and social unrest won't be far behind. We're already seeing the start of this in places like England and Norway, where gun restrictions encourage violence, destruction, and looting. The primary lesson to take away from this is the importance of having a means of protecting yourself and your loved ones in these times of panic and uncertainty.

An Open Letter to Mayor Bloomberg

Dear Mayor Bloomberg:

I read with interest that you (and fellow billionaire George Soros) are going to contribute millions of your own fortunes to supplement the tax dollars New York City's government will spend because "blacks and Latinos are not fully sharing in the promise of American freedom."

Yet rather than spending your own money ­ and that of the taxpayers ­ on retraining probation officers, posting job recruitment signs in government housing projects, and the other ideas mentioned in the New York Times article, you should consider much more effective ways to help young black and Latino men. As an added bonus, the following proposals would actually reduce government expenditures:

  • Stop enforcing drug laws against nonviolent individuals. Regardless of one's views on the morality of using currently illicit drugs such as marijuana and cocaine, most economists recognize that government prohibitions on this behavior lead to higher street prices, more overdoses, and gang warfare. I lay out the basic economics in chapter 20 of my textbook Lessons for the Young Economist. Suffice it to say, de facto legalization (as much as you can do at the city level) of drugs would very quickly transform the "blighted" areas so in need of help. As the price of heroin, cocaine, marijuana, etc., crashed down to their true market levels, being a drug dealer would be no more glamorous or profitable (in monetary terms) than being an alcohol dealer. There would be no incentive to use violence to capture market share, and thus drive-by shootings would virtually disappear. Remember that Al Capone and other gangsters killed each other over bootleg liquor distribution in the 1920s and early 1930s. Yet since Prohibition has ended, nobody gets shot for opening up a liquor store on the wrong street corner.

  • Stop forcing/subsidizing kids to go to school. As a former college professor, I can personally attest that it doesn't do anybody any favors when classes consist of some students who really want to be there versus others who are there for a checkbox (or worse, because they will get arrested if they skip class). If there's a teenager who doesn't want to read To Kill a Mockingbird or learn how plants use photosynthesis, don't use guys with guns to force him to sit in classrooms against his will. His presence in the classroom will make it harder to teach the other students, who have a better home situation (where the parents stress the importance of a well-rounded education). If you let this teenager leave school and get a job, he may someday mature and see the value in these "higher" things. At that point, he can go back to school, or learn all sorts of things using the Internet and other self-study techniques. In the meantime, rather than sitting in incarceration for years on end, being bored out of his mind and causing trouble with his like-minded friends, he will be learning useful job skills and contributing to society.
  • Don't prosecute business owners for paying less than the minimum wage. I realize there's only so much you can do as mayor; you can't stop the feds from cracking down on people. (However, you should read Tom Woods's work on nullification.) Even so, the minimum wage is the most important factor I (and many other economists) would cite in order to explain why the black-teen unemployment rate is about 50 percent! This particular issue is pretty straightforward. Most business owners aren't looking to give out charity in their operation. (They can write checks to various groups in their personal lives, if they are altruistic.) The only reason they will hire a worker and pay him, say, $8 an hour, is if (all things considered) the worker adds at least that much to the bottom line.
  • For various reasons ­ and these might include historical bigotry, inferior school systems, unfavorable home environments, etc. ­ the very demographics you and George Soros are targeting tend to have low productivity in many standard jobs. Simply put, lots of these kids won't be able to generate $7.25 per hour (the current minimum wage) in additional profits (not counting the expenses of adding them to the payroll) anytime soon after joining a company. A business owner would be throwing money away by hiring them, and that's why these kids have such a hard time finding a job.
  • Yes, yes, it's certainly true that you could try "worker training programs" administered by the government to give such kids better skills and make them more appealing to employers. But ask your staff to give you an assessment of the historical success of these programs. I think you'd find that if you let these kids get their foot in the door with a real job ­ as opposed to a taxpayer-funded training program ­ they'd gain valuable experience and learn actual skills very quickly.
  • The new employees who actually had initiative and just "needed a break" would soon demonstrate their character and would get raises once the employer could separate the wheat from the chaff. The problem is, right now it's against the law for an employer to cast a wide net and hire a bunch of job applicants, in order to see which ones show up consistently for at least three months, which ones know how to work a cash register and be courteous to customers, etc. It's cheaper and safer to keep a smaller workforce and spend money on automating operations ­ that's why fast-food joints can now crank out meals with just a few employees.

  • Cut spending and taxes. Besides the specific recommendations listed above, in general you can foster more economic opportunities for New Yorkers by getting the government out of the way. To that end, cut expenditures and taxes as much as possible. By allowing business owners to keep a larger share of their income, you will encourage them to locate in New York City and take advantage of its amenities. Coupled with the above suggestions, tax cuts would help New York become an engine of job creation.

There are plenty of things you can do as mayor that will actually help the "at-risk" residents of New York. Although it is admirable that you are putting up your own money, economic analysis shows that your "solutions" will not work. The so-called root causes of crime and poverty in urban areas today can be tied to destructive government policies.

Critics would no doubt warn you that my above suggestions are horrible, and that they would create a New York where poor teens have ready access to drugs yet can't get a good education and can't find a good job. Just realize that this perfectly describes the system we have right now.

The dust has not yet settled over the Libyan capital of Tripoli since rebels took control over the weekend. But already, a draft constitutional charter for the transitional state has appeared online (embedded below). It is just a draft, mind you, and gauging its authenticity at this point is difficult. There is also no way to know whether this draft or something similar will emerge as the final governing document for a new Libyan regime.

As both the Morning Bell and Washington in a Flash noted today, Heritage Fellow Jim Phillips recently pointed out that Islamist forces "appear to make up a small but not insignificant part of the opposition coalition," and must be prevented "from hijacking Libya's future." Parts of the draft Constitution allay those fears, while others exacerbate them.

Much of the document describes political institutions that will sound familiar to citizens of Western liberal democracies, including rule of law, freedom of speech and religious practice, and a multi-party electoral system.

But despite the Lockean tenor of much of the constitution, the inescapable clause lies right in Part 1, Article 1: "Islam is the Religion of the State, and the principal source of legislation is Islamic Jurisprudence (Sharia)." Under this constitution, in other words, Islam is law. That makes other phrases such as "there shall be no crime or penalty except by virtue of the law" and "Judges shall be independent, subject to no other authority but law and conscience" a bit more ominous.

This is just about the most disgusting thing I've ever heard.  They have gone straight up crazy over in the UK.

Rules on pedophiles seeing their children relaxed after judges decide their human rights are more important

Over in the United Kingdom, restrictions on pedophiles using the internet and seeing their own children have been torn up after judges ruled their human rights are more important. The Court of Appeal has overturned powers introduced by the last government to protect children from abuse following a landmark legal challenge.

Four men convicted of viewing child pornography online argued it would breach their "right to a family life" to keep them apart from their children and stop them surfing the web. In a controversial move, the Court of Appeal said judges should no longer impose total bans on sex offenders accessing the internet. Pedophiles have also won the right to have unsupervised access to their children as it would breach their human rights to keep them apart, judges said.

They ruled the 'right to a family life' must be taken into account before Sexual Offences Prevention Orders (SOPO) are issued. The decision by three appeal judges, led by Lord Justice Hughes, will seriously weaken the ability of the courts to place restrictions on offenders.

Last night Philip Davies MP said: 'This is very worrying. What concerns me is the criminal justice system always seems to put the rights of the criminal ahead of the public and victim. It risks creating a terrible victim of crime, which could be completely avoidable. That to me is unforgivable.'

One of those who brought the challenge was Wayne Clarke, 34, who was convicted in 2006. He had been traced to North Wales after breaching his bail and found to have a stash of electronic equipment containing photos and videos of young girls engaged in sexual acts. He had been in touch with a mother of a four-year-old girl and had sent her child pornography.

The Court of Appeal ruled the terms of Clarke's SOPO were "wider than necessary" and a blanket internet ban on him was "disproportionate". Conditions of the SOPO which prevented any social contact with boys was also 'unnecessary and unrealistic' as it would prevent Clarke from having 'ordinary family contact with his brother and nephews'.

What about the human rights of innocent children? How in the world does surfing the internet for pornography enhance the "family life" of a convicted pedophile? What mother in their right mind would dare leave their child alone, unsupervised, with a convicted pedophile?

I just can't believe what is happening in our world today.  Don't you forego certain rights if you are a criminal? The freaks and criminals are no longer being required to face the consequences of their actions. Lunatic judges have placed the "human rights" mantra above all that is good, failing to protect children from evil.

PASADENA, CA—Groundbreaking new findings announced Monday suggest the record-setting heat wave plaguing much of the United States may be due to radiation emitted from an enormous star located in the center of the solar system.

Scientists believe the star, which they have named G2V65, may in fact be the same bright yellow orb seen arcing over the sky day after day, and given its extreme heat and proximity to Earth, it is likely not only to have caused the heat wave, but to be responsible for every warm day in human history.

"Our measurements indicate the massive amount of energy this thing gives off is able to travel 93 million miles and reach our planet is as little as eight and a half minutes," said Professor Mitch Kivens, an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology. "While we can't see them, we're fairly certain these infrared rays strike Earth's surface, become trapped by the atmosphere, and just heat everything up like a great big oven."

"We originally thought that if this star was producing temperatures of 100-plus in the South and Midwest, it must be at least 100 degrees itself," Kivens added. "But it turns out it's far, far hotter than that, with a surface temperature of nearly 10,900 degrees Fahrenheit."

Kivens and his CalTech colleagues said this intense radiation, which results from constant nuclear reactions converting hydrogen to helium in the star's core, could also account for why the orb in the sky is extremely bright and difficult to stare at directly.

While scientists initially assumed the heat and luminescence of the star must make it the largest in the universe—a theory lent credence by the star appearing much bigger than other objects in the sky—they said the data actually appear to refute such a notion.

"Apparently it's gigantic simply because it's closer to us than any other star," Kivens said. "Which would also account for why we feel this particular star's heat during the day but are not warmed by the tiny blinking stars we see at night."

"It's interesting stuff," he added.

According to Kivens, the discovery has prompted researchers to explore the possibility that a variety of phenomena accompanying the heat wave could also be linked to the star, including taller grass, hot car seats, red skin burns, and sweating "even when one has just been standing there and hasn't been running around or anything."

An additional study is reportedly being conducted to determine if the unexplained shrinking of puddles until they disappear may be caused by star-hotness soaking up all the loose water. Moreover, scientists reportedly believe the heat emitted from the glowing orb could potentially be the reason why it is uncomfortable to walk on asphalt barefoot.

When asked if anything could be done to prevent or counteract the star's heat production, Kivens expressed skepticism.

"No, for the foreseeable future, I think we're locked into orbit with this thing," he said. "Although the star seems to disappear every night, 24-hour reports from around the world seem to indicate the star never leaves Earth entirely."

Residents of heat- and drought-stricken regions welcomed the findings, thankful to finally have an explanation for the high temperatures, if no relief from them.

"That makes sense, because it's usually hotter when that [star] is up in the air," said Stillwater, OK resident Asher Arps, 31, speaking to reporters as temperature rose to 110 degrees over the weekend. "I knew it lit things up, of course, but I didn't realize it could make things hot."

"The big star heats the earth, and the moon cools it—I get it," he added.

As to potential applications of the new discovery, experts acknowledge the possibilities could be limitless.

"This is a watershed moment," renewable energy specialist Dr. Martin Flint said. "Who knows where this could lead? Perhaps we could develop a method of harnessing these big star rays and transforming them into some sort of ecologically friendly power source."

Maybe you do not agree with his foreign policy of peace and non-interventionism.

Perhaps you heard some sort of distortion that he wants to legalize heroine when, in reality, he wants to leave that decision rightfully, and Constitutionally, up to the states.

The fact is, this presidential election is neither about heroine nor entirely about foreign policy. It is about the economy, and no Republican candidate knows economics better than Texas Congressman Ron Paul.

Small government Conservatism is all the rage with Republicans these days, and no candidate better represents that movement than the founder of the Tea Party himself, Ron Paul.

In commemoration of the Boston Tea Party, a moneybomb was held on December 16, 2007, when Ron Paul raised $6 million in a 24-hour period. This was the very beginning of the Tea Party movement.

Yet, the undeniable fact of the matter is, Paul still does not win over mainstream Republicans. Many, who in fact claim to be passionate Tea Party members, think of Paul as a "kook" or "crazy."

But still many of these people parade as small government aficionados and rave about the foul taste Obama has left in their mouths, while simultaneously writing off the single candidate who truly believes in freedom and small government in favor of establishment figures such as Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Palin-esque Michele Bachmann.

Paul has been ahead of the curve on economic issues. He was the first to raise questions about the Federal Reserve and its effect on the economy through the business cycle.

Now, the business cycle discussion is being talked from newer angles and much more intellectually.

Paul has been a different kind of politician in that, namely, he has shown integrity throughout his time in Washington.

Indeed, he has been the most consistent politician in, perhaps, American history. Paul has stood true to his principles and convictions through the decades, being the lone "no" vote in Congress numerous times.

Not once in his decades of political service has Paul once voted to raise taxes.

Social conservatives need not fret. Paul is vehemently anti-abortion and favors repealing Roe v. Wade. Additionally, he defines marriage as being between a single man and a single woman.

However, what separates Paul from the other candidates on these issues is that he does not allow his personal views to come into conflict with his views on the role of government.

Make no mistake, while Paul is a social conservative, he is a small government proponent first.

That means allowing anti-abortion and pro-gay marriage laws at the state level if such laws are passed.

Maybe that infuriates you about Paul, but it shouldn't. It is a sign of true principle and love of the Constitution.

No other Republican candidate for the presidency can claim to have such fondness of the Constitution or of limited government.

That's what Republicans want these days, isn't it?

In actuality, a person cannot truly be in favor of small government if he only favors it in the realms that appeal to him. Social freedom and economic freedom go hand-in-hand, and this is reflected in Paul's ideology.

And that is exactly why Ron Paul is the best choice for the Republican nomination. He truly represents what Republicanism and Conservatism are all about.

Principle and conviction are not all this Congressman has to offer. Paul stands the best chance of beating Obama in 2012.

In such an election, he would have the Republican vote locked up, courtesy of all the anti-Obama journalism of the past three years.

Furthermore, he wins many left-leaning voters who are disenfranchised by the lost promise of "change."

While his relatively high popularity with the Left may surprise some, it is as Paul optimistically proclaims, "Freedom brings us together."

There is something special about a candidate who can bring people of typically differing political views together.

Detractors claim that Paul appears "unpresidential," yet there's something undeniably very likable about him, something refreshing.

Conjecture abound, maybe it's his integrity and honesty, or maybe it's the freshness of a candidate who has real principles that do not change with the election cycle.

Maybe it's the way he refuses to go with the grain for political gain.

Whatever the case may be, Ron Paul is not only the best candidate for the Republican nomination, but he is the best choice for President of the United States.

But he has to get that far first.

All that really keeps him from being considered a top tier candidate by mainstream outlets is his foreign policy. For the next election, Republicans should put aside their beliefs on foreign policy and elect someone with integrity, intelligence and real knowledge of economics. Not another talking-point spewing figurehead.

That way, we all win.

      A "Voluntary Surrender" is not something where you decide "Gee, a license is not really something I need anymore, is it?" and forget to renew your license. No, a "Voluntary Surrender" is something you do when you've been accused of something, and you 'voluntarily surrender" your license five seconds before the state suspends you.

      When you are a phony it's hard to keep facts straight.

The Birther Summit issues an alert to the people of Honolulu, HI for someone who may very well be in possession of an original newspaper for which we will pay $5000! An original copy of the August 13, 1961 edition of The Honolulu Advertiser or the August 14, 1961 edition of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin will earn the first bearer $5000.

Those are the editions of the newspapers in which the purported birth announcement of Barack Obama appeared, and while we understand that the announcement's inclusion in those newspapers would not be conclusive proof that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii (as there were circumstances that would have allowed for them to appear without a Hawaii birth actually occurring), the only evidence anyone has actually seen of the birth announcements has been copies of microfiche versions of those newspapers, and they contain suspicious anomalies. As with the vault version of Obama's birth certificate (which has still not been forensically verified as being a valid document), we would like an opportunity to inspect one of these actual newspapers rather than purported representations of them.

The Birther Summit is aware that the existence of an original copy of one of these two newspapers might be fairly unlikely; however, August 13, 1961 was also the day that the first reports of the Berlin Wall's construction appeared in newspapers around the globe. For that reason, we believe that someone in Honolulu may have saved and stored a copy of one of them.

To redeem this reward, individuals may submit photographic evidence of their possession of one of those two newspapers to dean@birthersummit.org at which time instructions will be provided regarding the purchase process that will be brokered through our attorney's office.
