Cuba to drill six oil wells off Florida coast

President Obama and his Interior Secretary Ken Salazar have all but shut down the U.S. oil and natural gas industry drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, but foreign powers like China, Cuba and Venezuela aren't hesitating to move in to take advantage of America's bureaucratic paralysis.

Global Post reports preparations are moving forward for six wells in an area off the Florida coast in which U.S. experts have estimated could contain five billion barrels of oil. The Cubans are moving to tap into this potential energy bonanza with extensive aid from China, which built the massive drilling rig, and Hugo Chavez' Venezuela, which is providing drilling and production expertise.

A Spanish firm, Repsol, with partners in Norway's Statoil and Italy's Saipem, will oversee the operation. For more from Global Post, go here.

Not by coincidence, the latest data on U.S. drilling activity shows a continuing decline in the number of rigs in operation. The Washington Post reports this morning that another 10 units stopped operating, leaving a total of 1,958. Most of the newly idled rigs are in Texas.

1. Killing one or many innocents, regardless of one's grievances, is monstrous. This elementary principle would seem to apply to George Bush, and now Barack Obama, as much as to Osama bin Laden. Can someone say why it doesn't?

2. Despite all its guarantees -- contrary to its ideological justification for existing -- the state can't protect us -- even from a ragtag group of hijackers. Trillions of dollars spent over many years built a "national security apparatus" that could not stop attacks on the two most prominent buildings in the most prominent city in the country -- or its own headquarters. That says a lot. No. That says it all. The state is a fraud. We have been duped.

3. The shameless state will stop at nothing to keep people's support by scaring the hell out of them. ( Robert Higgs writes about this.) That people have taken its claims about "why they hate us" seriously after 9/11 shows what the public schools and the mass media are capable of doing to people. But the people are not absolved of responsibility: They could think their way out of this if they cared to make the effort.

4. Blowback is real. Foreign-policy-makers never think how their decisions will harm Americans, much less others. They never wonder how their actions will look to their targets. That's because they are state employees.

5. As Randolph Bourne said, getting into a war is like riding a wild elephant. You may think you are in control -- you may believe your objectives and only your objectives are what count. If so, you are deluded. Consider the tens of thousands of dead and maimed Iraqi and Afghanis (and dead Pakistanis and Yemenis and Somalis and Libyans). What did they have to do with 9/11?

6. No one likes an occupying power.

7. Victims of foreign intervention don't forget, even if the perpetrators and their subjects do.

8. Terrorism is not an enemy. It's a tactic, one used by many different kinds of people in causes of varying moral hues, often against far stronger imperial powers. Declaring all those people one's enemy is criminally reckless. But it's a damn good way for a government to achieve potentially total power over its subjects.

9. They say the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Maybe, maybe not. But it seems abundantly clear that the enemy of my friend is also likely to be my enemy. See the U.S.-Israel relationship for details.

10. Assume "your" government is lying.

11. Politicians will stop at nothing to shamelessly exploit the memory of the American victims of blowback if it will aggrandize their power. No amount of national self-pity, self-congratulation, and vaunting is ever enough.

As the fedgov scaremongers ramped up the fear factor in advance of the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, no stops were left unpulled to remind us to be scared out of our wits and that despite the necessary fear, we should "just go about our normal routines" because the government was on top of things. Burly men in military gear with machine guns appeared in the metro stations as that fateful anniversary drew near, and up and running were random bag checks of the poor drones headed for work.

News anchors dutifully reported that unconfirmed and uncorroborated but very specific threats had been picked up in the chatter on various of the usual jihadi websites. Nothing specific, but be on the lookout for American citizens driving Budget rental trucks. Thanks alot.

Now we are told that a military that could not muster an F-16 intercept of known hijacked planes in the midst of the worst attack on American soil, nevertheless scrambled F-16s to intercept a Frontier Airlines jet because a passenger's bout with diarrhea led to a general panic aboard the plane!

The pattern of psychological manipulation and propagandization using fear has led to a population not only insane with fear, but ready to send a poor fellow with a flatulence problem to Gitmo.

It would be funny if it were not so sick...

Meanwhile, the great James Bamford informs us that shortly after 9/11, everything had changed indeed: The horrifically misnamed National Security Agency turned all of its signals intercept equipment inward, deciding that they have seen the enemy and it is...us!

As Bamford writes:

At the NSA, thousands of analysts who once eavesdropped on troop movements of enemy soldiers in distant countries were now listening in on the bedroom conversations of innocent Americans in nearby states.

"We were told that we were to listen to all conversations that were intercepted, to include those of Americans," Adrienne Kinne, a former NSA "voice interceptor," told me....

The [NSA monitoring] equipment...monitored phone conversations and even what pages people view on the Web ­ the porn sites they visit, the books they buy on Amazon, the social networks they interact with and the text messages they send and receive.

Surely with the arrival of that the champion of ethics and liberty President Obama this Bush era badness was halted.

No, it was accelerated:

Rising in a remote corner of Utah, the agency's gargantuan data storage center will be 1 million square feet, cost nearly $2 billion and likely be capable of eventually holding more than a yottabyte of data ­ equal to about a septillion (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) pages of text.

Bamford, a real journalist and a true hero, reminds us of the words of the brave Senator Church who tried some 35 years ago to reign in the proliferating spook agencies that sought total control:

"That capability at any time could be turned around on the American people and no American would have any privacy left, such [is] the capability to monitor everything: telephone conversations, telegrams, it doesn't matter," Church said. "There would be no place to hide. If this government ever became a tyrant, if a dictator ever took charge in this country, the technological capacity that the intelligence community has given the government could enable it to impose total tyranny, and there would be no way to fight back because the most careful effort to combine together in resistance to the government, no matter how privately it was done, is within the reach of the government to know. Such is the capability of this technology."

We are there. It seems too late. Will a modern Sen. Church appear? Or a challenger already appeared only to have someone in a trenchcoat approach him with a secret file that he "would hate to have to make public"?

But considering you say we are not, how do you explain this muslim response to 9/11, in light of the fact that you are still giving them $$billions of our taxpayer dollars every year? I know, it's a rhetorical question.

Man Sues White Castle for Uncomfortable Seating Arrangements

From the NY Post:  A devoted, 290-pound White Castle fan is steaming mad at the fast-food chain, which he says repeatedly broke promises to make the booths in his local eatery bigger.   All stockbroker Martin Kessman wants is a place at the table. But when the 64-year-old walked into the White Castle in Nanuet back in April 2009 for his usual No. 2 combo meal, he got an unpleasant surprise.

"They're stationary booths," he told The Post. "I'm not humongous, [but] I'm a big guy. I could not wedge myself in." Mortified and in pain from smacking his knee into one of the table's metal supports, Kessman limped out of the restaurant, and later penned a complaint to corporate headquarters.

"As I looked around the restaurant, I saw that there were no tables and chairs that could accommodate a person that merely wanted to sit down and eat his meal," Kessman wrote.  Kessman claims he has no problem finding a place to take a load off at other fast-food places, and fits easily into airline seats.

White Castle replied with three "very condescending letters" -- and an offer that added insult to injury.  "In each letter was a coupon for three free hamburgers -- but the cheese was extra!" according to a lawsuit Kessman filed last week in Manhattan federal court.

But somehow, the humiliation didn't dampen Kessman's appetite for sliders at a discount.  "My wife went and picked up the burgers ... because I did not want to set foot into the store," he said. "Any subsequent trips to the store have been made by my wife -- I have been like an outcast."

White Castle also pledged to expand its seats, Kessman claimed.  "They sent me specs and everything, about how the booths were going to be enlarged and made comfortable for people with a little more weight," Kessman said. "So two and a half years went by, and nothing was done."

The Rockland County man says the chain's uncomfortable booths violate the civil rights of fat people.  The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is "applicable, not only to me, but to pregnant women and to handicapped people," he said.  "I just want to sit down like a normal person," said Kessman, who is suing for bigger chairs and unspecified damages.

Kessman could have approached a store manager and asked for a regular chair, said White Castle spokeswoman Jamie Richardson, who had no timetable for the expected renovation of the Nanuet store.

Disability is defined by the ADA as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity." In 2008, effective January 1, 2009, it was broadened and added to the ADA examples of "major life activities" including, but not limited to, "caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, eating, sleeping, walking, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, reading, concentrating, thinking, communicating, and working" as well as the operation of several specified "major bodily functions."

The definition of "impair" as defined by Merriam Webster: "to damage or make worse by or as if by diminishing in some material respect".

Kessman is purposely impairing his health by choosing to eat as many White Castle sliders as he wants.  It is insulting that he hides behind the ADA to protect his "civil rights".  Those that are born/end up with true disabilities are deserving of protection.  A person that freely chooses to stuff his/her mouth and make themself fat has only themself to blame.

In it they define Islamophobia as an exaggerated fear, hatred, and hostility toward Islam and Muslims that is perpetuated by negative stereotypes and ignorance …

Let's get this straight—fear is good. Any combat veteran will tell you that fear can save your life. When soldiers perform a heroic act, they were afraid while they were being a hero. [My step-father was a combat veteran WWII in the South Pacific and did three landing invasions. He said that if you were not afraid in combat, you were crazy and a danger to all men.] Many people feel that fear is bad and needs to be denied. But, fear directs our attention to threats, and there are very real threats to our well being. Fear lets us tap our inner core of strength. Fear, like love, is good.

Just as there are bad forms of love, like clinging and attachment, there is a bad form of fear—a phobia. A phobia is caused by imagined threats. A phobia is a neurosis and a disease of the mind and emotions. A phobia takes us away from reality, into our imagination; fear focuses us on reality. Here we have the key to curing this phobia, deal with the reality of the situation.

The reality we need to know is Islam; after all, that is what the phobia is about. It is odd, but very few people can even define Islam. Exactly and precisely, what is Islam, what is its doctrine? The definition of Islam is found in the declaration of Islam, the Shahada: There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet. But the Shahada is not only what you say to become a Muslim, it is the totality of Islam. It is agreed to by 100% of all Muslims as being true and points us to a complete Islam.

Allah is in the Koran which tells the world to live exactly like Mohammed. Luckily, there is a vast world of texts that tell us precisely what Mohammed did. Mohammed is found in the Sira (his sacred biography), and his traditions, the Hadith. Koran, Sira and Hadith are about Allah and Mohammed and this Trilogy defines Islam.

If it is in the Trilogy, it is Islam. Period. There is nothing else to read to know the complete foundation of Islam. Everything else Islamic is a comment on the Trilogy. Nothing can go beyond it, because it is complete, perfect, universal and final. That is the textual doctrine of Islam.

Why so much fuss to establish what Islam is? Simple, Islam and its apologists maintain that there is no doctrine and that even if there were a doctrine, a Kafir (non-Muslim) cannot know it. Islam wants you to believe that Islam is what a Muslim tells you. But, the only Muslims you want to listen to are Mohammed and Allah. Because once you know Mohammed and Allah, you will discover that the Muslims talking to you are only telling you half of the truth. Mohammed and Allah will tell you the whole truth and nothing but the truth. You can take Mohammed and Allah to the Sharia bank.
Since the Muslims claim that Islamophobia is caused by negative stereotypes, you have the cure because Mohammed and Allah define Islam. So, listen to the doctor, the next time you feel an attack of Islamophobia coming on, take one Allah and one Mohammed and contemplate their message of submission and dualism. If the Islamophobia does not pass immediately, then take some Sharia that deals with women's rights, dhimmis (non-Muslims who serve Islam), Kafirs and jihad. That will knock the Islamophobia right out of you. If you are still feeling a little ill, then read the history of jihad over the last 1400 years and the deaths of 270 million Kafirs. That phobia caused by ignorance will pass and you will be brought back to the reality of Islamo-fear, the firm grip on reality.

They found that Ellsworth, Prescott, Menomonie, Somerset and Hudson school districts are all reporting large savings due to the changes signed into law by Walker. Keep in mind, WEA TRUST is Shelly Moore's union insurance company, a company that has obviously been ripping off the school districts for years, thanks to collective bargaining that prohibited school districts from seeking insurance coverage from any company other than WEA Trust. How much tax money would we have saved if school districts had been "allowed by the unions" to bid out their insurance over the years? I'd say probably many, many, many millions statewide. It's the union money train running off the tracks, finally, and Shelly and her union don't like it. WANT MORE GOOD NEWS?? Walker just signed an Unemployment Insurance extension adding 13 weeks of UC benefits. Passed a state budget on time, without tax increases, that leaves WI in the black for the first time in over 10 years. Turned a $3 billion deficit into a $300 million surplus. Cut bonding by nearly 20%. Cut more than 1,000 government jobs, including 735 long-term vacancies. In the first 6 months of 2011 WI showed job growth more than twice the national rate. Protected our votes by requiring a picture I.W. at the polls. Became the 49th state to recognize our 2nd Amendment right to carry concealed weapons. Paid off WI's $60 million debt to MN under the former tax reciprocity agreement. Paid back over $200 million to the Injured Patients and Families Fund. This is money that ex Gov. Doyle unconstitutionally raided from the Patients' Compensation Fund. Walker expanded the prohibition against tax money being used to subsidize abortion.

New York is a city under siege. As I write on the morning of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, thousands of police, federal agents, and the National Guard are swarming over the panicked metropolis, as reports proliferate that three suspected terrorists who entered the country recently are planning a car-bomb attack. Bomb-sniffing dogs patrol Grand Central Station, while police checkpoints delay traffic for hours – and threats appear on the White House Facebook page.

Amid the hundreds of editorials, reminiscences, and opinion pieces directed our way this somber day, all of which seek to extract some larger meaning from the worst terrorist attack in American history, the real meaning of that signal event is plain as day: we are losing the "war on terrorism" – big time.

Look at what happened in New York City: how many resources, how many tax dollars, have been expended in the search for three terrorists who may or may not be planning an attack? One of the major pieces of evidence for the 9/11/11 plot is the uptick in " chatter" supposedly filling the terrorist communications network. But what if this "chatter" is a calculated tactic? Simply by feinting – "leaking" false information – the Bad Guys can provoke a major and exhausting response, draining us until we're eventually so worn down – or so bankrupt – that they accomplish their goal without even launching another strike on the scale of 9/11.

As Osama bin Laden put it in a videotaped message broadcast by al-Jazeera on November 1, 2004:

"All that we have to do is to send two Mujahedin to the farthest point East to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al-Qa'ida in order to make the generals race there to cause America to suffer human economic and political losses without their achieving for it anything of note.… So we are continuing this policy in bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy."

The late terrorist leader went on to point out that

"Al-Qa'ida spent $500,000 on the [9/11 attacks], while America in the incident and its aftermath lost – according to the lowest estimates – more than 500 billion dollars, meaning that every dollar of al-Qa'ida defeated a million dollars by the permission of Allah besides the loss of a huge number of jobs. As for the size of the economic deficit, it has reached record, astronomical numbers estimated to total more than a trillion dollars. And even more dangerous and bitter for America is that the Mujahedin recently forced Bush to resort to emergency funds to continue the fight in Afghanistan and Iraq which is evidence of the success of the bleed-until-bankruptcy plan with Allah's permission."

As we scramble to defend New York City against a threat that may not even exist, bin Laden's ghost is laughing at us from beyond the grave.

Yet there are worse fates than mere bankruptcy. We are living in a world where, if you get up and go to the bathroom more than once while traveling on a airplane, the flight is diverted on account of your " suspicious behavior."

Hysteria has blinded us to the real threat. Even as the terrorists openly proclaim their "bleed-until-bankruptcy plan," we continue to travel down the same path to economic oblivion. It has been widely noted that the 19 hijackers appropriated our own high technology – airliners – and turned them against us, but little noted that they also appropriated our emotional commitment to a war of revenge and used it in a similar fashion. As bin Laden put it:

"So we are continuing this policy in bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy. Allah is willing and nothing is too great for Allah. That being said, those who say that al-Qa'ida has won against the administration in the White House or that the administration has lost in this war have not been precise because when one scrutinizes the results, one cannot say that Al-Qa'ida is the sole factor in achieving these spectacular gains. Rather, the policy of the White House that demands the opening of war fronts to keep busy their various corporations – whether they be working in the field of arms or oil or reconstruction – has helped al-Qa'ida to achieve those enormous results."

New fronts in our endless "war on terrorism" are opened, it seems, with each passing week: Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, the Philippines, Pakistan, and now Libya – where we are carrying out the new co-optation strategy of the Obama administration, which seeks to hijack the "Arab Spring" and utilize it as a weapon of against Islamist extremism. By setting up US-aligned "democratic" states in the Middle East, from Egypt to Libya and beyond, the Americans hope to inoculate the region against the virus represented by al-Qaeda.

This is a dangerous policy in so many ways that it would take more than a single column to even list them. Suffice to say that recent events in Egypt, and the growing influence of Islamist elements among the Libyan rebels, underscores how the "blowback" from our efforts could backfire in our faces.

We've spent trillions fighting this losing battle, but more than money has been lost – we've forfeited our freedom. The barrage of legislation enacted since 9/11 that empowers our government to openly spy on us in ways that would have been inconceivable before has effectively abolished our old republic, and replaced it with something else – a misshapen, polyglot creature, half "democratic" and fully authoritarian, which cannot sustain itself economically, and – for all its vaunting about exercising "world leadership" – shows every sign of descending into an irreversible decline .

If some historian of the future should attempt to chronicle the decline of the American republic, the point when history made its fateful turn will be readily identifiable: September 11, 2001, the day the 9/11 coup d'etat was victorious. As President George W. Bush sat reading The Pet Goat to a group of schoolchildren while the World Trade Center and the Pentagon came under attack, the government was effectively taken over by Vice President Dick Cheney and a cabal of government officials already in place and ready to assume command of the world's mightiest superpower. From that moment on, the War Party had its hands on the reins of power, and they remain in the drivers seat to this day – albeit under another partisan alias.

For ten years they've been driving this country into the ground, just as bin Laden predicted they would. As dead as he is, he's having the last laugh: his strategy is working.

Speaking of strategies that work: the circumstances surrounding the terrorist icon's death point the way to fighting an effective campaign against those who plot and plan to pull off another 9/11. We didn't get bin Laden by launching a massive invasion, or by "democratizing" the Middle East: it was good old fashioned police work, meticulous and patiently executed, that finally nailed him in his lair. We didn't beat the Mafia by invading Italy – and we won't beat the Islamist Mafioso by conquering Afghanistan and occupying great swathes of the Muslim world. Unfortunately, our present rulers show no signs of having learned the lesson of their greatest success.

Yes, we do have enemies who want to kill us, but those ghouls who worship Thanatos understand that death can take on many forms. A man can still continue to exist long after he has betrayed everything that made him uniquely himself. Nations, too, can commit this kind of slow motion suicide, so that the passage from life to death can go undetected until it is far too late to reverse course.

Is it too late for us? I fear the answer to this question, because we cannot know it until that point is well behind us. I can only let the historians of the future argue the question, while here, in the present, I fight – in my small way – to influence their verdict.

demand Shariah Law so the wife can not obtain a divorce and he can have
full and complete control of her.

is amazing and alarming how many of our sisters and daughters attending
American Universities and British Universities are now marrying Muslim
men and submitting themselves and their children unsuspectingly to the
Shariah law.
By passing this on, enlightened American and British women may avoid becoming a slave under Shariah Law.
 
Ripping the West in Two..
 
Author
and lecturer Nonie Darwish says the goal of radical Islamists is to
impose Shariah law on the world,  ripping Western law and liberty in
two.
She recently authored the book, Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law.
Darwish
was born in Cairo and spent her childhood in Egypt and Gaza before
immigrating to America in 1978,  when she was eight years old.
Her
father died while leading covert attacks on Israel.  He was a
high-ranking Egyptian military officer stationed with his family in
Gaza.  When he died, he was considered a "shahid," a martyr for Jihad. 
His posthumous status earned Nonie and her family an elevated position
in Muslim society.
But Darwish developed a sceptical eye at an early age. She questioned her own Muslim culture and upbringing..
 
She converted to Christianity after hearing a Christian preacher on television.
In
her latest book, Darwish warns about creeping Sharia law - what it is,
what it means, and how it is manifested in Islamic countries.
 
For
the West, she says radical Islamists are working to impose Sharia on
the world.  If that happens, Western civilization will be destroyed.
 
Westerners generally assume all religions encourage a respect for the dignity of each individual.
Islamic
law (Sharia) teaches that non-Muslims should be subjugated or killed in
this world.  Peace and prosperity for one's children is not as
important as assuring that Islamic law rules everywhere in the Middle
East and eventually in the world.
 
While
Westerners tend to think that all religions encourage some form of the
golden rule, Sharia teaches two systems of ethics - one for Muslims and
another for non-Muslims.
Building
on tribal practices of the seventh century, Sharia encourages the side
of humanity that wants to take from and subjugate others.
 
While
Westerners tend to think in terms of religious people developing a
personal understanding of and relationship with God, Sharia advocates
executing people who ask difficult questions that could be interpreted
as criticism.
 
It's
hard to imagine, that in this day and age, Islamic scholars agree that
those who criticize Islam or choose to stop being Muslim should be
executed.
 
Sadly,
while talk of an Islamic reformation is common and even assumed by many
in the West, such murmurings in the Middle East are silenced through
intimidation.
 
While
Westerners are accustomed to an increase in religious tolerance over
time, Darwish explains how petro dollars are being used to grow an
extremely intolerant form of political Islam in her native Egypt and
elsewhere.

twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in the U.S. and Britain
To elect the President by themselves!   Rest assured they will do
so...   You can look at how they have taken over several towns in the
USA ..   Dearborn Mich. is one...  And there are others..)

I
think everyone in Australia, U.S. and Great Britain should be required
to read this, but with the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely
publicized, unless each of us sends it on!
It
is too bad that so many are disillusioned with life and Christianity to
accept Muslims as peaceful...   Some may be but they have an army that
is willing to shed blood in the name of Islam..   The peaceful support
the warriors with their finances and own kind of patriotism to their
religion.
While
America and Britain is getting rid of Christianity from all public
sites and erasing God from the lives of children, the Muslims are
planning a great Jihad on America .   (Britain and probably Australia) .
