Terrorism with your pancakes? FBI, DHS, Police Raid 7 IHOP Restaurants
Is there a terrorist investigation in the Heartland? There are conflicting
reports, but FBI, Homeland Security, ICE and IRS agents along with local
police raided seven IHOP restaurants, six in Ohio and one in Evansville,
Indiana. The warrants are sealed but boxes were seized and loaded into
U-Hauls.
By Ms. Smith on Tue, 09/20/11 - 3:00pm.

http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/78724
Well, well, well, there was some scattered excitement and murmurings of
possible terrorist investigations as the feds were busy raiding seven IHOP
restaurants across Ohio and Indiana on Tuesday morning. It took about an
hour and a half to arrive at the IHOP Evansville scene were the FBI was
working as the lead agency with assistance from Homeland Security's
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, IRS agents and local law
enforcement.

Even as Johnny-on-the-spot, there seemed to be a whole lot of nothing going
on from the outside looking in, watching a U-Haul van parked in the back of
the IHOP in Evansville, Indiana. Although I was ready for it, armed with the
ACLU photographers' rights, no one harassed me about taking photos.
Evansville employees sat behind the building and waited while the feds were
inside. Although no one wanted to comment, another IHOP employee and perhaps
manager kept barking, "Who are you talking to?" at the others who were using
their cell phones.

While most agents who descended on the scene were being tight-lipped about
executing a sealed search warrant and the raid, the FBI told 14 News that
the agents on scene in Evansville were from the Cleveland, Ohio branch, but
all the raided IHOPs are owned by "Tarek Elkafrawi, locally known as Terry
Elks." Elk owns seven IHOPs: one in Evansville, Indiana, two in Toledo,
Ohio, and the other four also in Ohio: one each in Holland, Lima, Perrysburg
and Findlay. Two of Elks' homes and two storage units were also raided,
according to WTOL. As many as 50 boxes filled with files were removed from
one IHOP in Toledo and "dozens" removed from another.

Although the investigation is closed, a "well-placed source in the Toledo
Police Department" told WTOL that the feds are investigating money
laundering, funding terrorist organizations and possible undocumented
workers. Conversely, Patrick Lenow, director of corporate communications for
DineEquity, parent company of IHOP and Applebee's told the Evansville
Courier & Press, "We have been told by authorities it does not involve
terrorism." Lenow added that DineEquity as well as IHOP franchise owner
Terry Elks were cooperating with all the raids.

The Toledo Blade in Ohio claimed the raids were "reportedly for suspected
terrorist activity." An update by the Toledo Blade included Toledo IHOP
assistant manager, Travis Noe, saying, "Agents with badges and guns arrived
shortly after 6 a.m. He said the agents told him to stay still and allow
them to search the place and gave no details on why they were searching the
restaurant. After taking out boxes, the agents left about 10:30 a.m." Yet
another IHOP employee said he when he arrived at work this morning, he was
immediately ordered "to put his hands up in the air."

FBI Special Agent Scott Wilson told the Courier & Press that he did not know
if anyone was detained from the seven IHOP restaurant raids on Tuesday
morning. Like the six IHOP locations in Ohio, federal agents loaded white
boxes allegedly filled with documents into a U-Haul trailer. At the time of
this report, although 10 boxes were taken in through the back door, seven
boxes were removed from the Evansville IHOP restaurant by gun-toting feds
like in the image below. The Courier & Press added that "one agent had what
appeared to be three or four computer hard drives in his hands."

NMA Blog: Why The Majors Love Mandates

Why The Majors Love Mandates
By Eric Peters, Automotive Columnist

I've written previously about the add-on cost of government-mandated "safety" equipment such as multiple air bags and (most recently) stability control, tire pressure monitors and (soon) back-up cameras and (very possibly) in-car Breathalyzers, too.

It's hard to pin down the exact per vehicle cost of these things — chiefly because they're not listed as individual options but rather folded into the "base price" of the vehicle — but a reasonable estimate is probably around $2,500 or so at the point of sale (this naturally includes mark-up).

But the aspect I've not written about is the opportunity cost imposed by these mandates. The stifling effect, in other words, on what-might-have-been.

And also, the probable fact that the major car companies are happy about both of these costs — the additional built-in profit-per-car as well as the stifling effect.

As the nattily dressed hitman in Pulp Fiction put it, allow me to elucidate:

Let's say you are a bright backyard engineer — maybe even an actual engineer. You like to design things and one day hit upon the notion that maybe your design for a new car would be something people might be interested in. That you could do it better or less expensively or just more interestingly than the established players in the field.

Sixty-odd years ago, a guy named Preston Tucker had such an idea. So, like Tucker, you get to working in the garage out back. The project begins to come together and as word spreads, you discover that yep, there are people interested in what you're doing.

Unfortunately, some of those people are employees of the government.

Specifically, the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency. They will swoop in with turgid — and then threatening — demands that you sell no cars to the public (no matter how much the public may want those cars) until those cars have complied with every line-item regulation in their repertoire of regulations and codes. Oh, and not just that. Even if by some miracle your new car produces less pollution than a new Prius — even if it is more crashworthy than a new Mercedes S-Class — you will still be required to demonstrate it to their satisfaction. Which if you're not familiar with the way a car company complies with federal ukase involves (for example) destroying dozens of brand-new cars in various types of crash tests to placate Uncle Sam's minions.

And who can afford to destroy a dozen perfectly good brand-new cars? A major automaker can — but not you.

This one thing alone likely will (and in fact does) constitute a crippling obstacle that will make it economically impossible for you to sell your new car to the public. Even if, like the '48 Tucker, your car is actually more advanced and innovative than the cars being sold by the majors.

Maybe you've figured out a way to cut the weight down to 1,600 pounds by using a spaceframe and lightweight composites — and so the car gets 80 MPG. Maybe you found out, after doing some surveys of potential customers, that a simple, light, fuel-efficient car was very much desired. One that didn't come with $2,500 (or more) worth of government-mandated "safety" equipment but which did cost $2,500 less than a car with those items. So you decided to try to build it — knowing they (the buyers) would come.

Instead, the government came.

Down. Hard.

First you'd be shut down; probably fined — then possibly jailed. If you declined to pay the fine or (much worse) had the insolence to continue building cars the public — vs. the government — actually wanted to buy as opposed to forcing you to build.

And that is very likely just what the established car companies want — which is why the established car companies have become such big boosters of whatever the latest "safety" technology happens to be — and even supine in the face of potentially crippling mandates (to smaller competitors, anyhow) such as the recently enacted federal rule that will require all new cars to average 50-something MPG (while also complying with all the existing federal ukase that has driven the weight of the average new car up by 500 pounds, on average) within a few years from now. All without any real concern about such doesn't-matters as how much it will end up costing. Because of course, they aren't the ones paying the bill.

We are.

Walking arm in arm, the major automakers and their friends in Washington know they serve one another's best interests now.

And their interests include keeping you and any other subversive tinkerer off the field. They want the market cornered.

And you, too.

Once you grasp the nature of this symbiotic relationship you will understand why there hasn't been a single successful new car company (outside of politically correct and wholly government-subsidized efforts such as Tesla Motors, producer of the $100k electric Edsel) in decades — and a winnowing of the previously existing herd down to a handful of enormous cartels that are (drum roll, please) "too big too fail."

These cartels enjoy a direct line (via the police power of the state) to your wallet and mine — directly and indirectly. They also enjoy protection — from competition, especially.

It's part of the reason why they (the cars) all look just the same, mostly drive just the same — and force-feed you the same "features," too. Because there's no legal alternative, no third option. It's Tweedledee or Tweedledum. In politics and cars.

Independents need not apply.

Hidden Charges Found in Obama's "Tax the Rich" Plan that Affect Non-Millionaires and Non-Billionaires

It's no wonder Obama is rushing Congress to pass his bill. His unread bills always have hidden extras and Democrats love to pass unread bills so they can learn what's in them.

WASHINGTON -- It's not just millionaires who'd pay more under President Obama's latest plan to combat the deficit.

Air travelers, federal workers, military retirees, wealthier Medicare beneficiaries and people taking out new mortgages are among those who would pay more than $130 billion in government revenues raised through new or increased fees.

Airline passengers would see their federal security fees double from $5 to $10 for a nonstop round-trip flight and triple to $15 by 2017, raising $25 billion over the coming decade. Federal workers would face an additional 1.2 percentage point deduction from their paychecks to contribute $21 billion more for theirpensions over the same period. Military retirees would pay a $200 fee upon turning 65 to have the government pay their out-of-pocket Medicare expenses.

They'd also pay more for non-generic prescription drugs.

Letter by a Job Applicant

Re-hire Me, Please

September 20, 2011

To all my employers:

Yes, I know now that I applied for this position with too little experience and even less competence.  And I know that my performance has been a disappointment to a lot of you… okay, most of you.

But it is with hope, bordering on great confidence, that I can now assure you:  Not only have I learned a lot from my mistakes, there are going to be improvements – big ones. They are coming any day now.

Every week or so, I am learning a lot more.

Yes, I know that 31 months and 3 weeks on the job was a long time to wait for improvement, but when you think about it… it really was only 26 months when adjusted for my training and vacations.

Now that I am finally ready, I really need another couple of years, at least, to begin to deliver some improved results...and improve my resumé.

So please rehire me when my contract runs out.  You probably won't be sorry.

Sincerely yours,

B O (POTUS)

Disclaimer:

BO did not write the above, just as he did not write his two autobiographies. It is not for nothing that he's known as the Teleprompter POTUS.

The above letter was ghostwritten by my friend Jay B. Gaskill, licensed attorney and former Public Defender of Alameda County, California. Check out his Policy Think site, here!

Mother of murdered girl 'put into kebabs' runs from court after gruesome testimony

Last updated at 15:00 31 May 2007

Victim: 14 year old Charlene Downes has not been found after going missing

cid:C335E1B0-1B9D-4E5C-AB29-4B224D40AFA5@cg.shawcable.net

She was allegedly killed by Iyad Albattikhi, 29, owner of Funny Boyz fast food shop in Blackpool

A mother ran from court today as she heard how her daughter was strangled before being chopped up.

Iyad Albattikhi, 29, known as Eddie, had sex with 14-year-old Charlene Downes, before killing her and joking her body had been put into the kebabs at his shop on Blackpool Promenade, Preston Crown Court has heard.

Today David Cassidy, a former friend of the accused, told Preston Crown Court how the defendant's brother confessed to him about the murder - and that the youngster had been throttled to death.

Mr Cassidy, 40, who ran an amusement arcade in the town, told the jury Tariq Albattikhi had rowed with his brother and, upset and in tears, told him about how the schoolgirl had been killed.

"He was crying," Mr Cassidy said. "He said there was a lot of blood. I was only getting a bit of the conversation through the tears.

"He told me that she was strangled." At this point Charlene's mother, Karen Downes, sitting in the public gallery, gasped and fled the court in tears.

Charlene, from Buchanan Street in Blackpool, disappeared on November 1, 2003, after kissing her mother goodbye to go off with friends.

Expelled from school, she spent most of her time hanging around the shops on the Prom, where Albattikhi owned and ran Funny Boyz kebab shop.

A missing persons inquiry began after she vanished but police later launched a murder investigation after information "leaked out".

No trace of Charlene's body has ever been found. Albattikhi, a Jordanian immigrant, is charged with murder and his co-accused, his business partner and landlord, Mohammed Reveshi, 50, originally from Iran, is accused of helping to dispose of the body.

Both deny the charges and have told police they never knew Charlene. Ian Goldrein QC, defending Albattikhi suggested Mr Cassidy was telling the court a "pack of lies" and suggested the conversation never took place.

He said the witness had a long criminal record for dishonesty stretching back to the age of 17 - and could not be relied upon to tell the truth. Mr Goldrein asked the witness why he waited months after the conversation with Tariq before he told police.

Mr Cassidy said, "Because I did not know if what was being said to me that night was true. I had to determine whether it was hearsay or gossip." The trial continues.

Groucho Marx Saves America

By Stella Paul

America is roaring back -- with laughter.  A fed-up nation with itchy Twitter fingers is bringing down what's left of an insufferably pompous presidency.  How?  By unleashing the most American weapon of all: the wisecrack.

A hilarious barrage of catcalls and insults has greeted Obama's latest debacle, a Soviet-style website called Attack Watch.  With its terrifying design of red and black cellblocks, and scary photos of Obama's critics looking like Mafia hoodlums, Attack Watch openly solicits Americans to turn in their friends and neighbors for thoughtcrimes against the president.

Before we revel in our countrymen's deliciously rude response, let me show you the section of Attack Watch that truly creeps me out.  Do the Stasi wannabes that write Obama's copy really think this invitation will win us over?  "Join Attack Wire - and help stop the attacks on the President before they start."

Before they start!  Hey, comrades, is your wife muttering Rick Perry's name in her sleep?  Does Grandma secretly watch Glenn Beck?  Report your loved ones' pre-crimes to federal authorities now!  A few friendly adjustments with a fist, and we guarantee we'll stop those deviant, anti-Obama attacks, "before they start."  Help us, comrades!

Within nanoseconds of Attack Watch's debut, a parody video by Ezra Dulis and Misfit Politics had blasted through the web.  Then came the howls of Hurricane Twitter, a Category 5 of one-liners, as Americans competed to turn themselves in and report anti-Obama crimes.

"Hey, #attackwatch, I saw 6 ATMs in an alley killing a job. It looked like a hate crime!"  "#Attackwatch, there's a new Twitter account making President Obama look like a creepy, authoritarian nutjob."  "I'd like to report my neighbor - Bob, for surreptitiously scraping the Obama sticker off the bumper of his Prius."  "My neighbor won't give me all her money even though she makes more than me. Look into this please."

"I just found out that Janet Napolitano is my baby's father. Can you let him know? Thanks."  "Obama's ego is blocking my view of the sky."  "If I tell you my boss said something bad about Obama, can I get his job?"  "Hey #attackwatch, I found a website lying about Obama, it's called whitehouse.gov."  "My neighbor seems to be a bit of a freethinker. Should I take him out quietly tonight or wait for backup?"

"I just parked my private jet in a handicap space, left it running & bought lemonade from little girls in yard w/o a permit!"  "Dear #attackwatch, I was told in my Econ class that supply & demand drives the economy, not government. True or false?"
"#Attackwatch, when should I go to my hidden attic room, and start writing my diary?"  "Can you follow the #attackwatch timeline in the original German...?"

"I'm reporting my mom. She said Obama needs a good spanking and a grounding with no ice cream."  "Dear attackwatch -- the federal family showed up a week ago --- and they won't leave."  "If I report ten times do I get a real watch? With secret decoder features? Please advise."

Now that's the America we know and love!  We came to this country to get away from the imperial blowhards that ruined every other patch of earth.  We roast and skewer potentates here; we don't tremble and bow down before them.

America gave the world the raspberry, the Bronx cheer, and the full frontal, knock 'em, sock 'em wisecrack.  And just to amuse ourselves, our popular entertainments have always put those putdowns in the mouths of the lowliest street tramps and shop girls, so they can belittle the bigshots.

It's democracy; get it? Groucho Marx is honored on an American stamp, not Karl.  The Marx Brothers grew up on the hardscrabble streets of New York, the sons of Jewish immigrants, and their vaudevillian antics lampooned the self-important, mirthless high hats of high society.  They'd know what to do with Barack Obama!

For, increasingly, Obama has come to resemble one of those haughty buffoons in the classic Marx Brothers movies, who's just begging for a pie in the face or banana peel under the shoe.  He's the nasty impresario in Night at the Opera or preening admiral in Duck Soup, who demands meek submission, while Harpo secretly cuts off his coattails and Chico steals his wallet.  Meanwhile, Groucho gleefully insults him to his face, with a line like "Why don't you bore a hole in yourself and let the sap run out?" or "I never forget a face, but in your case, I'd be glad to make an exception."  Cigar rakishly askew, Groucho then turns to the audience and confides, "He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot, but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot."

Obama's imperial pretensions are not just idiotic; they're also noxiously un-American.  At the turn of the twentieth century, a new Jewish immigrant penned a letter that was published in a Yiddish newspaper.  "In America, the president is mister, and I am also mister," he wrote with awestruck amazement.  That uniquely American earthiness derives from George Washington, who rejected the proposed title of "His High Mightiness, the President of the United States and the Protector of their Liberties" for the simple "Mr. President."  Why do I think Obama would like that title back?

The more America laughs at Obama, the more we recover our natural spirit.  So go ahead.  Release your inner Groucho.  Add your comic creations to the Twitter-ectomy of Obama's remaining shreds of dignity.  It's not that hard.  As Will Rogers, another great American comic, once said, "There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you."

Greetings Everyone!

I have a favor to ask, from you all.   As many of you know, I have been in Germany for most of 2011, working on a matter that involves both criminal and civil litigation spread over four continents.   The primary focus of this litigation is a gentleman by the name of Dr. Man-Ki Kim, a Korean National, who was the President and Chief Executive Office of a company called SMI Hyundai Corporation.

I am respectfully asking all of you to write a short note, both on the FaceBook page, and on MK's web site, showing support. It doesn't need to be much, any old cliché line is good, and/or any message of support or of hope is also welcomed. Things like, "Praying for you and your family"; or "Keep Fighting The Good Fight!"; to: "We're thinking of you"; and/or "You are in our hearts and prayers"; etc., etc., etc.

Besides the fact that these messages of support are good for the Kim family,  (The messages have proven to be very inspirational for Dr. Kim's wife and children!)  the messages help us from a legal standpoint, in that the German prosecution is attempting to claim that Man-Ki Kim has no friends or support.  That he alienates all that he has surrounded himself with.  This is untruthful, but many of the allegatiosn by the German prosecution are untruthful, as this is a very politically motivated trial.

If you go to the FaceBook Page, please make sure that you click the, "Like" button!

The link to MK's FaceBook Page is:

MK's web page,  ("message of support page") is:

If you can get anyone else to write, then this is also good!  we surely appreciate it!

I sincerely thank all of you for taking the time to show support!

My Best,

DADT: The End of an Error

In college, I served as a confused and closeted gay man in the Air Force Reserves under Don't Ask, Don't Tell.  I can tell you first-hand that being forced to lie about something so fundamental doesn't make you a better servicemember, it doesn't add to "unit cohesion" and it certainly doesn't make you a better person.  Today I celebrate [...]
