Details of Obama's letter to Iran released
http://www.mehrnews.com/en/NewsDetail.aspx?NewsID=1513259
TEHRAN, Jan. 18 (MNA) -- A number of Iranian officials have released the
details of the letter that U.S. President Barack Obama recently sent to
Tehran.
The New York Times, citing U.S. government officials, wrote on January 12
that the Obama administration had sent a message to Supreme Leader of the
Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei warning that closing the
Strait of Hormuz is a "red line" that would provoke a response by the United
States.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast said on January 15
that U.S. officials had sent a message on the Strait of Hormuz to the
Islamic Republic through three officials, noting, "Susan Rice, the U.S.
ambassador to the United Nations, delivered a letter to Mohammad Khazaii,
the Islamic Republic of Iran's ambassador (to the UN). The Swiss ambassador
to Tehran (Livia Leu Agosti) also conveyed the message, and Jalal Talabani,
the Iraqi president, conveyed the message to officials of the Islamic
Republic of Iran as well."
Obama has called for negotiations
MP Ali Motahhari said on Wednesday, "In the letter, it has been stated that
'closing the Strait of Hormuz is our red line' and they have requested
direct negotiations."
"In the letter, Obama has announced readiness for negotiation and the
resolution of mutual disagreements," he added.
He went on to say that Obama uttered threats in the first part of the letter
and talked about friendship and negotiation in the second part.
Obama says U.S. will not take hostile action against Iran
MP Hojjatoleslam Hossein Ebrahimi said on Wednesday, "Obama's letter has
several parts. Part of it is about this, (namely) that using international
waterways is the right of all countries and all should benefit from them.
And in this letter, he has described it as the United States' red line."
"In the letter, Obama has mentioned cooperation and negotiation based on the
interests of the two countries," Ebrahimi, who is the deputy chairman of the
Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told the Nasimonline
news website.
"He has stated in the letter that they will not take any hostile action
against the Islamic Republic of Iran," he added.
Ebrahimi also said, "This is not the first time that Obama has sent a
message and letter to the Islamic Republic of Iran. He has repeatedly spoken
in a soft tone about the Islamic Republic of Iran, but, in practice, he has
not acted accordingly."
"Obama's letter indicates that the United States has become afraid of the
Islamic Republic of Iran's might and has realized the point that an arrogant
spirit is of no use, and therefore, he has softened his tone when speaking
about the Islamic Republic of Iran," he stated.
He added, "The important issue is that without the Islamic Republic of
Iran's permission, no country can benefit from the Persian Gulf."
Iran responsible for maintaining security of Persian Gulf
Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaii also commented on the letter on
Wednesday, saying, "Mr. Obama has written a cunning letter and intended to
claim that the U.S. is responsible for maintaining the security of the
Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran itself is responsible for
maintaining the security of this region."
"We maintain the security of the region with the help of regional
countries," he said, adding, "There is no need for the presence of
extra-regional forces to maintain the security of this region, and we
believe that the presence of the United States and Britain mostly creates
insecurity."
If they "feel compassion" for regional countries and want to help them
enhance security in the region, "I advise them to leave the region," Rezaii
stated.

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The owner of the Atlanta Jewish Times apologized
for an opinion column in which he counted President Obama's
assassination as among Israel's options in heading off a nuclear Iran.
"I very much regret it, I wish I hadn't made reference to it at all,"
Andrew Adler told JTA on Friday.
He said he would publish an apology in his next edition, and that
reaction from readers had been overwhelmingly negative.
Fox News reported late Friday on its website that the Secret Service
was investigating the column. In his interview with JTA, Adler said he
had not been approached by the Secret Service.
In a Jan. 13 column, Adler, who is also the paper's publisher,
outlined what he said were three possible responses by Israel to
Iran's acquiring a nuclear weapon: a pre-emptive strike against Hamas
and Hezbollah, terrorist groups that he said would be emboldened by a
nuclear Iran; a direct strike on Iran; and "three, give the go-ahead
for U.S.-based Mossad agents to take out a president deemed unfriendly
to Israel in order for the current vice president to take his place,
and forcefully dictate that the United States policy includes its
helping the Jewish state obliterate its enemies."
He continued: "Yes, you read 'three' correctly. Order a hit on a
president in order to preserve Israel's existence. Think about it. If
I have thought of this Tom Clancy-type scenario, don't you think that
this almost unfathomable idea has been discussed in Israel's most
inner circles?"
Gawker, the gossip and media news website, first reported on the
column Friday.
Ophir Aviran, the Israeli consul general in Atlanta, condemned the
column "in the strongest possible terms."
In response to a JTA request for comment, Aviran said in an e-mail
that he was "appalled at this deranged and morally repugnant
assertion."
The Anti-Defamation League condemned Adler's column as "outrageous."
"An apology cannot possibly repair the damage," said the ADL's
national director, Abraham Foxman, in a statement.
Foxman added that "Mr. Adler's lack of judgment as a publisher, editor
and columnist raises serious questions as to whether he's fit to run a
newspaper."

Jewish newspaper's editor resigns over Obama assassination column
By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor
(CNN) - A Jewish newspaper owner who attracted U.S. Secret Service
attention for a column suggesting that Israel consider assassinating
an American president has resigned as the paper's editor, employees
there said Monday.
The resignation comes after a firestorm over the column and after a
tearful apology from the editor-in-chief of Georgia's Atlanta Jewish
Times, Andrew Adler.
The JTA reported Monday that Adler is selling the newspaper, but the
office manager, Jerry Farkas, said that was incorrect and that Adler
hadn't announced plans to sell.
The paper's newly named interim editor-in-chief, John McCurdy, said in
an e-mail that he had not talked with Adler about whether he planned
to sell the paper.
Adler wrote a January 13 column about the threat of Iran to Israel,
posing three options for the Jewish state. One was a "hit on a
president in order to preserve Israel's existence."
The column attracted interest from the U.S. Secret Service, with
spokesman George Ogilvie saying Saturday, "We are aware of it. We are
taking the appropriate investigative steps."
In an interview with an Atlanta TV station on Saturday, Adler broke
down as he apologized for the column.
"All I could do now is let President Obama, the State of Israel,
everybody affected in Atlanta's Jewish community … (know) that I'm
sincerely sorry for what has transpired," Adler told Atlanta
Interfaith Broadcasters Inc., straining to choke back tears.
"It's storming outside as we speak, and I've always felt that when a
storm happens that God's angry with me," Adler said.
Farkas said the paper is working with the Jewish Federation of Greater
Atlanta to find a permanent managing editor.
The federation had said that it was suspending its relationship with
the Atlanta Jewish Times until Adler apologized, agreed to stop
writing and gave up editorial control.

Rand Paul, a U.S. Senator from Kentucky, was reportedly stopped at Nashville International Airport Monday morning, according to his office.
There has been conflicting information about whether Rand Paul, the son of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, was actually detained.
But Rand Paul's office claimed Rand Paul set off the full body scanner and then refused a full pat down.
A posting on Ron Paul's Facebook page also claims Rand Paul was detained at Nashville International.
Check The Tennessean for additional information as details become available.

Tea Party Patriots: The Second American Revolution
(Henry Holt, 2012)
BOOK FORUM
Thursday, February 16, 2012
Noon (Luncheon to Follow)
Featuring the authors Mark Meckler and Jenny Beth Martin, Cofounders, Tea Party Patriots; with comments by John Fund, American Spectator; moderated by Edward H. Crane, President, Cato Institute.
Mount Vernon Place, Undercroft Auditorium, 900 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001
In 2009, an unemployed mother of two and a politically inexperienced northern California attorney met on a conference call that would end up launching one of the largest grassroots political movements in American history. Mark Meckler and Jenny Beth Martin have since become the faces behind the Tea Party Patriots. By promoting the basic principles of free markets, limited government, and fiscal responsibility, the Patriots have capitalized on the recent groundswell of discontent around the country, inspiring a much-needed resurgence in the importance of constitutional constraints. In their new book, Meckler and Martin explain the genesis of this movement, what the Tea Party is and is not, and what its plans are for the future. Join us for the launch of this book by two emerging leaders, with comments by John Fund, a senior editor at the American Spectator and former political columnist for the Wall Street Journal.
