J. Ashley: You never did define a single problem with our government

I see that 1st went to an immigrant. Wonder if the 3rd place
winner was a native or an immigrant. Nice to see that our way of life
is appreciated by an immigrant to the point that she wins a contest of
this type.

Cuban and American Socialism
by Jacob G. Hornberger

The disastrous failure of Cuba's socialist economic system provides valuable clues to the American people as to why the United States is mired in economic woes. While total socialism has led Cuba into the depths of economic despair, the partial socialization of the American economy has led America in the same direction. Equally important is what socialism has done to the mindsets of both the Cuban and American people.

Consider Cuba's system for providing food to the populace. Since the state owns everything in Cuba and has a totally centrally planned economy, the state is responsible for providing food to the people. It has long used a ration system, one in which the Cuban citizen goes to a nearby government-run ration station to pick up his regular allotment of beans, vegetables, meat, and other food-stuffs.

Recently Cuban President Raul Castro proposed doing away with the food-ration system, given the horrible economic disaster it has produced. Not surprisingly, that caused some degree of fear and consternation among the Cuban people. According to the New York Times, one 36-year-old engineer exclaimed, "How will we afford food? They will have to lower food prices a lot so people do not starve. This all seems so much so fast."

That is what socialism does to people. Here is a guy who has lived under a system of socialist central planning with respect to food all his life. The system has proven to be a disaster, with people on the verge of starvation. Yet, when you propose to him that such a system be abolished, immediately, and that the food industry effectively be turned over to the free market, he panics. He simply cannot imagine how the free market could be trusted to ensure that everyone is adequately fed.

Of course, that was the same mindset that afflicted many people in the Soviet Union. The mindset was: "How can we sure that the free market will produce the correct number of sweaters, the right sizes, and the colors that everyone wants? Don't we need the state to guarantee these things?"

If you were to ask the average American whether he would favor the federal government's nationalizing the food industry, including all the farms and ranches, and taking over the production and distribution of food, he would exclaim, "Absolutely not! Leave food in the hands of the free market. The government would just make a big mess of things, as it has in Cuba." And most Americans would not hesitate to explain to that Cuban engineer that the free market can be trusted to ensure plenty of food in privately owned grocery stores and convenience stores across the country.

But consider such socialistic programs as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, central banking (i.e., the Federal Reserve), and public schooling, all of which, by the way, are part and parcel of Cuba's socialist system. Most Americans living today have been born and raised under these socialistic programs, which are almost as big a mess as Cuba's food-rationing program. They are all in perpetual crisis, and no matter how many different reform plans are adopted, the crises are always ongoing.

The disastrous failure of these programs should not surprise anyone. Like Cuba's food system, they all involve some sort of socialistic central planning in the areas of retirement, charity, health care, money, or education. As the Austrian economists (e.g., Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek) showed long ago, socialistic central planning is inherently defective. It will always produce crisis and chaos no matter whose reform plan is adopted.

When libertarians propose the immediate end of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Federal Reserve and paper money, and public schooling, isn't the reaction of most Americans just like the reaction of that Cuban engineer? Don't Americans freak out at such a thought as much as the Cubans freak out at the thought of dismantling their food-rationing program?

"We can't just end Social Security all at once. Why, old people would die in the streets!"

"We can't just end Medicare and Medicaid all at once. Why, people would be dying of illness in masse!"

"We can't restore sound money to America all at once. Why, there would be chaos in the financial markets!"

"We can't separate school and state all at once. Why, everyone would be stupid!"

That's what socialism does to people. It causes them to maintain a deep and abiding dependence on the state for their sustenance.

The best thing that could ever happen to the Cuban people would be for them to "push the button" and immediately and completely dismantle Cuba's food-rationing system and, well, for that matter, its entire socialist economic system.

Equally so, the best thing that could ever happen to the American people would to "push the button" and immediately and completely repeal Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, paper money and the Federal Reserve, public schooling, and, well, all other welfare-state (and warfare-state) programs.

An immediate dismantling of socialism and socialistic programs would immediately produce a tremendous surge in creativity, ingenuity, capital, productivity, prosperity, charity, and education.

What is needed to ditch socialism into the dustbin of history, once and for all? A restoration of self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-reliance and a renewed faith in freedom and free markets in the Cuban people, the American people, and the people of the world.

Wile E. Coyote Killed In Central Park
Wile E. Coyote Killed In Central Park
Minutes before his death, Wile E. Coyote is seen racing past a Central Park fountain.

NEW YORK (CAP) - Famed banal bird bagger of the surreal desert SouthWest Wile E. Coyote (Carnivorous Vulgaris) died last week in New York, according to his long-time agent Tim Springer.

"Everyone that knew Wile knows the past few years haven't been particularly kind to him," Springer said in a released statement. "He hasn't worked in years, and even when he was working, he wasn't eating that well. He just wanted to go to New York to try and change his life around."

According to a police report obtained by CAP News, it looked at first like Mr. Coyote was well on his way to doing so. The pigeon is a much slower bird than the road runner, and Central Park pigeons in particular have what can kindly be called a muted sense of self-preservation. During his first two weeks in the Big Apple, Wile E. Coyote dined well.

"We'd get occasional reports about explosions, a guy in a bat suit and the like, but this is New York. Fuggedaboutit," said Desk Sergeant Mike McLadden.

Police began to get suspicious when numerous packages from a company called Acme started getting delivered to the Lenox Avenue Playground. Police staked out the playground and didn't have long to wait.

"It was a friggin' coyote on jet-powered roller skates, I swear to friggin' God," said one officer on condition of anonymity. "He swooped in here, grabbed up the package and was gone before I could even unholster my weapon, much less yell Freeze, scumbag! Un-friggin'-believable."

Officers spent the next three days unsuccessfully trying to corner Wile E. Coyote. They'd get close, but he would zip away on a rocket sled. More than one officer described "portable holes" that the elusive coyote would toss at walls and boulders before jumping through. Several officers were treated for concussions after trying to follow their prey through the "holes". Empty bottles of Acme Hi-Speed Tonic were found littered all over the park.

"The big shame about all this is that after all these years of supporting them, Acme started to come through for Wile," said Tim Springer. "After [former FEMA head] Mike Brown left the board, they seemed to really get their act together."

The beginning of the end came on Wednesday, when nearly a hundred officers pursued Wile E. Coyote after confiscating his latest Acme package. They chased him to the reservoir, which Mr. Coyote attempted to swim, apparently forgetting that his fanny sack was full of dehydrated boulders.

"All of a sudden his ass bulged out and like fifty boulders shot out of it and into the reservoir," said professional mugger and eye-witness Derek Smith. "That dog or whatever the hell it was was good though. He kept hopping boulders until he got around the cops and he was gone."

His freedom didn't last long. Wounded, exhausted and hopped up on the highly addictive Acme Hi-Speed Tonic, Wile E. Coyote staggered into traffic a short time later where the "Beep beep!" of a cabby's horn caused what coroners are calling a massive heart attack. His last words, written on a sign and help up moments before his death, were, "I should have been a %&@#*$# vegetarian."

The Road Runner, suffering from an avian flu strain which has rocked the animation and puppetry industry, declined to comment for this article.

Obama calls GOP Budget "Radical" while wanting to share medical information on Facebook

I see Obama is sticking to the Chuck Schumer/DNC plan to paint Republicans as extreme and radical. Obama has the balls to call the Republican's budget radical for making cuts that reduce the deficit while his budget almost doubles the national debt ($20.8 trillion) by 2021. Each year Obama is in office, $1 trillion plus is added to the national debt.

Obama's spending is so radical that S&P downgraded U.S. credit outlook. We all know who the Saul Alinsky radical is.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — President Barack Obama said Wednesday that congressional Republicans are pushing a radical plan to trim Medicare and Medicaid, ramping up the rhetoric as he and Congress approach crucial decisions on spending and the nation's debt.

"I think it's fair to say that their vision is radical," Obama told a town hall gathering at the headquarters of Facebook, the huge social network company.

"I don't think it's particularly courageous," he said of the GOP plan to convert Medicare to a voucher program and make big cuts to the federal-state Medicaid program for the poor.

"Nothing is easier than solving a problem on the backs of people who are poor, or people who are powerless, or don't have lobbyists, or don't have clout," Obama said.

That's our class warfare President. Notice he didn't mention his Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) that let's a 15-person panel make cuts to Medicare without fear from the judicial branch.

Other Democrats have called the GOP plan radical, but the president generally has used less pungent language. Even as he sharply criticized the Republicans' spending proposals Wednesday, he said he believes the two parties can reach an accord on long-range plans to cut deficits by about $4 trillion over the next decade.

Obama made the comments in a friendly environment -- one with 19 million friends, in fact. He told Facebook employees and others watching online the nation must invest vigorously in education, clean energy and research that are vital to future jobs and a strong economy.

Making the case for his own deficit-cutting plans, Obama said that one way to trim health care costs could involve doctors sharing medical information on Facebook, the hugely successful social network.

Talk about radical. Exposing medical records over the internet on a social network. Facebook is one of the biggest pushers of Obama's Kool-Aid. Now get back to playing your damn FB games Obots.
